Ford Entering Electric Bike Market

Bike enthusiasts and commuters may soon have another option to expedite their travels. USA Today recently reported that Ford Motor Company is exploring development of an electric bike.

Ford President and CEO Mark Fields discussed the company’s Smart Mobility plan  during his keynote at CES 2014. The program outlines a company-wide initiative to invest in the development of multiple innovative transportation technologies – not just cars, but all types of mobility options for consumers.

Fields told Forbes in January 2015 about the global strategy: “…We’re asking ourselves how we use innovation to allow Ford to help tackle some of these large societal issues around congestion and transportation. And that is why we’re thinking of ourselves as not only a car and truck company, which is very important and we’re not going to lose the focus on that, but also as a mobility company. We see these issues and we want to be part of the solution.”

According to the report, Ford’s e-bike would be powered by a 200-watt electric motor, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and will include certain technologies present in Ford’s motor vehicles, such as a navigation system and sensor technologies.
