Cybersecurity and the Electrical Grid

Last weekend, an Indianapolis Business Journal article detailed the implications and impact of a recent cybersecurity hack and the steps taken by local security firm Rook Security, in coordination with the FBI in Indianapolis. In early July when Hacking Team, a company that offers cyber-spying tools to nearly 100 intelligence agencies globally (including the FBI), was the victim of a data breach, a number of public and private organizations immediately jumped to attention to combat the potentially devastating outcomes – direct access to personal computers and smart phones, publicized vulnerabilities in commonly used web programs, and others.

In the midst of the growing number of cyber attacks in the past several years, the risks extend far beyond our personal computers and other web-enabled devices. Because our electrical infrastructure is increasingly automated, electronically managed and connected to the internet, energy security becomes a major concern. A cyber attack on the electrical grid could result in devastating consequences on a significant scale.

Energy Systems Network President and CEO Paul Mitchell was quoted in the article stating, “This step taken by Rook is a perfect example of the kind of best practices that we need to be learning from and supporting.” Read the full article here.
