RELEASE: Town of Fishers, Duke Energy, and Project Plug-IN Partner to Provide EV Charging Stations

RELEASE from Town of Fishers, June 8, 2012:

FISHERS, Ind (June 8, 2012) Do you own an electric car? Thinking about buying one? The Town of Fishers, in partnership with Duke Energy, recently installed two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Located in the Municipal Complex in front of the Fishers Train Station, each 240-volt Level 2 charging station can fully charge an electric vehicle in four to six hours, at no cost to Fishers residents.

These charging stations were installed by Duke Energy as part of Energy Systems Network’s (ESN) Project Plug-IN initiative at no cost to the town or its residents. The equipment was provided by the initiative, which received American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant funding through the Indiana Office of Energy Development to expand charging infrastructure. These units are part of a two-year pilot program in which Duke Energy will own, operate, maintain and monitor them. At the end of the two years, Duke Energy will transfer ownership to the Town of Fishers.

“We want to study the charging habits of plug-in electric vehicle drivers to better understand how these vehicles will integrate into the power grid,” said Mark LaBarr, north central district manager for Duke Energy Indiana. “Knowing what amount of charging occurs during peak demand times and what electric vehicle owners expect from their charging experience will help us maintain overall reliability while minimizing costs for all customers.”

“By adding electric vehicle charging stations, we are providing a resource for residents with plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) to charge while they are out and about in the Town,” said Fishers Town Council Member Renee Cox. “We are continuously striving to improve the sustainability of the Town, and installing electric vehicle charging stations is one step towards that goal.”
